In 1965, two extraordinary ideas collided to produce one of the most astoundingly beautiful and rare Blenko pieces ever created. The first (or maybe second—order unimportant) was Joel Myer’s soon-to-be revered design for a rapturously curvaceous and organic and nearly unprecedently monumental architectural decanter. It would be a whopping 43 inches tall and bear the catalog number #6535. The second was the wondrous alchemy that resulted in Blenko’s “Chestnut”—a deep dark amethyst-y brown. Blenko ‘lore’ has it that Blenko’s browns have been produced so infrequently (Chestnut was made for one year only, and so was 2003’s Ginger) not because they were unpopular but rather, because they were more difficult (read expensive!) to produce with any consistency. During Blenko’s entire ‘historical period’ (1946-1974), I believe there was only one other one-year-only color besides Chestnut--1958’s Mulberry.

In short, not only is this Blenko/Joel Myers #6535 architectural decanter in to-die-for 1965-only CHESTNUT SPECTACULAR, it’s also impossibly rare. Once this is gone, your time is better spent hunting unicorns....

The complexity of this deep rich Chestnut and how it changes in the light is remarkable. I’ve posted a few photos in different lighting and will hopefully get around to posting more. Notice how awesomely AMETHYST the decanter looks in front of a sunlit window!

DIMENSIONS: ~42.75” tall, and ~11” in widest diameter
CONDITION: MINTY! Some base wear, of course. The interior of the decanter is very clean and undamaged by moisture, mineral deposits, etc. The stopper is perfect. Given the sheer size of this piece, the existence of some bubbles and/or straw marks, and/or other normal production variations is a given; none are significant enough to point out individually. The same goes for possible scuffs or scratches. I can find none, or none are significant enough to catch my eye but assume there must be a few on such a large old piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom and personalized orders

GLASSpheme loves custom orders! But how do we 'customize' vintage glass? Simple. We love glass and we love our customers--and there are many ways we can help!

1) Volume discounts: Let's say there are several pieces you MUST have. Let me know, and I'll send you our very best price for the lot.

2) Custom displays: Say you have a special place in your home that SCREAMS for a glass display. Send me a photo of the space, your budget, and the accent colors for your room, and we'll send you photographs of possible groupings and our special pricing for the lot.

3) Tell us what groupings you have in mind, and we'll photograph them together for you so you can see how they'll look together.

Gift wrapping and packaging

What could be better than giving a gorgeous piece of vintage glass as a gift? (Aside from getting one, that is.) Glass is beautiful and functional--mostly! Consider a super mod biomorphic bowl or cased glass jar for a vanity or dresser, a platter/centerpiece for fruit on a countertop, or a vase for cut flowers. Not only does vintage glass bring exquisite delight to the most mundane of household functions (you should see our soap dishes), but our beauties increase in value over time. Send us a note telling us your purchase is a gift, and we will send it along with your personalized gift card, colorful tissue paper and a bow. (You alone will receive the receipt by email.)

Can I Select Custom Arrival Dates?

GLASSpheme ships your purchase on the very next business day, but we're flexible too! If you're going away on vacation or have a special date you'd like your gift to arrive, send us a note, and we'll time our shipping for you!

How can I get coupons for your shop and be informed of sales?

Simple! Join the GLASSpheme mailing list! Paste this link in your browser, send us your email address, and VOILA--you'll be among the first to know when your favorite piece of glass is on sale, or when we're offering coupons.
